Today I went to a food bank.
It wasn’t too bad. It was staffed mostly by elderly church goers but they were all very nice and considerate.
They let me wait outside until my number was called as I couldn’t handle the noise and crowds inside. It was orderly, just too much.
Then they get your address (if you have one) and some basic info like how many people in your family and any special notes.
I said I didn’t want any frozen food because I wouldn’t be able to make the best use of it. But that i did have a little camp stove to heat water or soup and a can opener. So instead they would give me an extra can or package of something else.
I scored! They gave me an extra pear, for a total of 3. When I exclaimed “hamentaschen! I used to make these!” at the desert spot they gave me *both* packages of hamentaschen. I guess maybe no one else knew what they were and didn’t want them? Then, at the last stop they had a selection of odds and ends (I guess that’s what they were) and told me I got to select one item. I was looking at the can of black olives when the lady said, “oh, and over here I have a package of dried mango”, I about squealed out loud. I LOVE dried mango and I can’t afford it now. So I got a whole package of dried mango yummyness.
Wow.
Oh, and a loaf of raisin bread. And some can of various chili/ravioli/type stuff and a couple little fruit cups and some instant oatmeal packages.
Oh yeah, they did give me two frozen packages of spring rolls because I said I could eat those in the two days they’d last after they defrosted (they didn’t need to be cooked) and they wouldn’t go bad. After I left that station and I was almost all the way through the frozen food lady comes running after me with a small package of frozen deli style lunch meat. She says “here, this will defrost slowly, you can probably use this!”. I said “yeah, I can use this” and accepted it and then said “oh but wait, you need one of these egg roll packages back!” but she said I should keep it.
So tonight, if the egg rolls have defrosted enough I’ll have egg rolls for supper tonight. It’s been cool all day though so they may not defrost until tomorrow. I don’t know if I could defrost/heat them up in a pot with a little water or not. Would probably take too much fuel..dunno..
Hmmmm….
Yummyness.

They’re a treat made for the Purim holiday, referencing king Hamon from the story of Esther.
In actuality they’re shortbread cookies with fruit filling.
Very rich and very yummy!
